Universal design/design-for-all/lifespan design - whatever you call it, it's a vision of design that starts from an assumption that human variation and change are constants. Adaptive Environments can provide general technical assistance on universal design by providing you with basic information, references for resource materials, and suggestions for an approach to problem solving using universal design principles and values.
Please inquire about consultation for project-specific work. We undertake a limited number of direct consultation projects each year. We only engage in projects that have a goal of universal design beyond the requirements of access under the law. In the U.S., we start from the premise that the goal of universal design is more expansive than the legal requirements for access and responsive to broader marketing goals. However, we want our clients to have confidence that we will help them to meet all compliance requirements under federal and state law in the context of universal design. Adaptive Environments offers a menu of universal design consultation services. We will work with you directly to plan an approach that makes sense for your organization or project. Adaptive Environments can provide detailed plan reviews of buildings, parts of a buildings, facilities, institutions or outdoor spaces. We are also available for on-site design review. We will assist you to identify and locate the state of the art universally designed products and materials. In-house staff and/or Adaptive Environments' Associates can deliver diverse options for services across the design professions.

Fees are contingent upon an agreed-upon scope of work. All fee-based work begins with an agreement about scope of work, time frame and cost.
Adaptive Environments promotes the use of 'user experts' - people with disabilities and older people who have been trained in the legal requirements of access and in universal design. Their participation in design problem solving can be an invaluable way to avoid unneccessary mistakes and creatively identify solutions that might not be obvious.
