IFI Interiors Declaration

The historic signing of the IFI Interiors Declaration!

We did it! Thank you. Without all your commitment, participation and great enthusiasm,
we would not have this consensus based vision/mission statement for the Interiors
discipline. This Declaration (see below), is an outcome of the IFI DFIE Global Symposium,
and forms an unanimous agreement establishing the essential foundations and
their advancement for Interior Architecture/Design Worldwide. The ideas contained in
the Declaration provide clear goals for and affect the fundamental understanding and
shaping of our practice, its education and research, and for the outcomes required of our
built environment in support of humanity, society and culture.

The IFI Design Frontiers: The Interiors Entity (DFIE) Global Symposium, co-sponsored
by the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution, and supported
by the Museum of Arts and Design, was held in New York City on Thursday 17th
and Friday 18th February, 2011 and culminated in the signing of a formal IFI Interiors
Declaration, a fi rst in the history of our profession.

The IFI Executive Board (2009-2011) - comprised of Constance Ann (Singapore),
Ronnie Choong (Malaysia), Iria Degen (Switzerland), Iris Dunbar (UK), Luz Maria
Duran (Mexico), Suzan Globus (USA), Farida Kamber (UAE), Joo Yun Kim (Korea),
Joe Pettipas (Canada), Past President and Special Advisor to the Board, Madeline Lester
(Australia) and I - are proud to announce this historic event.

The Symposium received unequivocal support of IFI members and was fully endorsed
by such leading national design groups and associations - among others - as the
Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), an independent, non-profi t accrediting
organization for interior design education programs at colleges and universities in the
US, the European-based Cumulus International Association of Universities and Colleges
of Art, Design and Media; the Interior Design Educators Association (IDEA), representing
major universities throughout Australia and New Zealand; the Interior Design Educators
Council (IDEC), active in the US and Canada; Interior Educators (IE), a recently
established organization of academics engaged in teaching in the well recognized Interior
Architecture/Design courses across the UK; and the National Council for Interior Design
Qualifi cation (NCIDQ) in the US.
